Becoming a soccer referee is a great way to learn more about the sport, see the game in a new way and earn money, too.
The Madison Area Soccer Referee Unit holds U.S. Soccer Federation new Referee Courses before each season.
New Referee Course Description
You must be 12 years old or older at the start of the season to attend the course.
The New Referee Course training is a 16-hour course divided into eight hours online and eight hours in class. It is designed to provide entry-level referee skills and information through online, classroom and field training for referee candidates. The emphasis is on preparing referees for youth program officiating; the field emphasis is on practice of specific procedures. Administration of the USSF Referee Exam is included in the classroom session.
Successful Referee Candidates younger than 14 will earn a Grade 9 USSF Referee Badge. Successful Referee Candidates 14 or older will earn a Grade 8 USSF Referee Badge.
Pre-registration for the New Referee Course is required. To register, you must create an account on the WisRef website. Click NEW USER? Then follow the online instructions. After creating your GO account you will be able to register for any New Referee Courses in Wisconsin.
Although becoming a USSF Soccer Referee is simple, there are start-up and annual expenses.
The Referee Course fee is $70. You will also need to purchase a uniform and some basic equipment (approximately $50 to $70) before officiating your first game. Annual re-certification courses are required to maintain current registration (approximately $55 to $65).
