We're excited to announce that Oregon Soccer Club's 6U through 10U programs will have a new look when the 2022-23 season kicks off next fall.

Oregon SC technical directors Bobby Nichols (girls) and Patrick Goolsby (boys) and our Board of Directors unanimously supported these changes, which we believe will result in improved soccer experiences for our players.

Here's the new structure for those age groups:

IN-HOUSE

The term "In-House" refers to programs that operate mainly under the club's jurisdiction, rather than under another governing body such as MAYSA or WYSA. The club has increased flexibility to offer appropriate experiences for players in In-House programs — for example, if a 6U child wants to play soccer for the first time and their parents would rather have them placed in the 4U/5U program to start, that can be done.

4U/5U

(For the 2022-23 season, players born in 2018 and 2019)

Same as our current Pre-K Kickers program: Games, fun, basic beginnings of skill development, small scrimmages for the final 15 minutes. All kids receive a size-3 soccer ball as part of their registration.

  • Sessions per week: One
  • Length of sessions: 45 minutes
  • Number of sessions: Six in the fall, six in the spring.
  • Coaches: Parent volunteers.

6U

(For the 2022-23 season, players born in 2017)

Games are 3v3 with no goalkeepers, no referees (coaches on field call fouls, out of bounds, etc.). Fields are smaller than 7U.

  • Sessions per week: Two
  • Length of sessions: 60 minutes — first 30 minutes practice, second 30 minutes game
  • Number of sessions: 16 sessions in the fall, 16 in the spring (One weeknight, one or two on weekend days)
  • Coaches: Parent volunteers.

7U

(For the 2022-23 season, players born in 2016)

Same as current 7U/8U program: Games are 4v4 with no goalkeepers, no referees (coaches on field call fouls, out of bounds, etc.). Fields are larger than 6U. Additionally, we hope to offer an optional, free weekly session for In-House 7U/8U players with a professional coach.

  • Sessions per week: One or two practices per week (coach/team decision), plus games.
  • Length of sessions: Practices — 60 minutes. Games — 40 minutes (two 20-minute halves).
  • Number of games: 8 in the fall, 8 in the spring.
  • Coaches: Parent volunteers.

8U

(For the 2022-23 season, players born in 2015)

Two options: In-House or Academy.

In-House 8U

Same as 7U, but league is for 8U players only. Games are 4v4, with no goalkeepers, no referees (coaches on field call fouls, out of bounds, etc.). Additionally, we hope to offer an optional, free weekly session for In-House 7U/8U players with a professional coach.

  • Sessions per week: One or two practices per week (coach/team decision), plus games.
  • Length of sessions: Practices — 60 minutes. Games — TBD.
  • Number of games: Eight in the fall, eight in the spring.
  • Coaches: Parent volunteers.

Academy 8U

Oregon SC is one of the few clubs in the Madison area to have Academy accreditation from the Wisconsin Youth Soccer Association (learn more) — this accreditation is for 8U through 10U age groups. The 8U Academy program will be essentially equivalent to our current 9U Academy program. Training sessions are run by professional coaches, following the Oregon SC Academy Curriculum. 8U and 9U Boys Academy teams will practice together, as will 8U and 9U Girls Academy teams. We will find an appropriate competition level based on the team (either 4v4 or 6v6 competitions against other Madison-area clubs or 7v7 in lower tiers of MAYSA leagues).

  • Sessions per week: Two practices per week, plus games.
  • Length of sessions: Practices — 90 minutes. Games — 50 minutes (two 25-minute halves)
  • Number of games: To be announced.
  • Coaches: Professional coach for practices; parent volunteers assist at practices and coach all games.

9U

(For the 2022-23 season, players born in 2014)

Two options: Recreational or Academy.

Recreational

Same as our current Recreational 9U/10U program. Additionally, we hope to offer an optional, free weekly session for Recreational 9U/10U players with a professional coach.

  • Sessions per week: One or two practices per week (coach/team decision), plus games.
  • Length of sessions: Practices — Coach/team decision. Games — 50 minutes (two 25-minute halves)
  • Number of games: League — Eight in the fall, eight in the spring. Teams can choose to play in tournaments at additional cost.
  • Coaches:  Parent volunteers.

Academy

Essentially equivalent to our current 10U Academy program. Training sessions are run by professional coaches, following the Oregon SC Academy Curriculum. 8U and 9U Boys Academy teams will practice together, as will 8U and 9U Girls Academy teams. Teams play in the appropriate MAYSA leagues (either 9U Rec A or 10U lower tiers).

  • Sessions per week: Two practices per week, plus games.
  • Length of sessions: Practices — 90 minutes. Games — 50 minutes (two 25-minute halves)
  • Number of games: League — Eight in the fall, eight in the spring. Tournaments — Two tournaments in the fall, two in the spring (game totals vary by tournament).
  • Coaches: Professional coach for practices; parent volunteers assist at practice and coach all games.

10U

(For the 2022-23 season, players born in 2013)

Academy

Training sessions are run by professional coaches, following the Oregon SC Academy Curriculum. 10U Academy will have dedicated practices (not combined with other age groups). Teams play in the appropriate MAYSA leagues, with the goal that after two full seasons of Academy, the teams would be at a level where they could play in an 11U league. If that is not appropriate for a given team, it could play in 10U (ideally Rec A).

  • Sessions per week: Two practices per week, plus games.
  • Length of sessions: Practices — 90 minutes. Games — 60 minutes (two 30-minute halves) if playing in 11U; 50 minutes (two 25-minute halves) if playing in 10U.
  • Number of games: League — Eight in the fall, eight in the spring. Tournaments — Two tournaments in the fall, two in the spring (game totals vary by tournament).
  • Coaches: Details to be determined, but will include a professional coach for practices.

Please note that slight adjustments could be made to these programs, based on further feedback.
